About Us

ART THROB is an independent publication and a collaboration of many talented writers and photographers. Our funding comes from a combination of sponsors, donors and grants.

Our editorial and funding decisions are aided by a board of advisors. They are artists and musicians, art fans and fundraisers and come from arts organizations, theater companies, galleries, museums, film studios and more.

We aim to chronicle the importance of art in our every day lives. Our definition of art is not confined to things that hang on museum walls. We have a constant re-occurring theme among our founding contributors that art is in the cracks and crevasses of the sidewalk, in a way of looking at life and in the people around us.

We plan to update content daily to keep things fresh and in real time. We are not only an online magazine, but a repository of art, as well. We’re a canvas, a living, breathing experiment that will contain art in the form of paintings, poetry, sound and video. We are not finished. Not complete. Like the artist, we will be evolving over time and we welcome you to our launch to watch from the beginning how an online magazine is born…and grows. Our look may transform, our content may evolve and we hope you’ll be logging on to see our metamorphosis over time.

Why are we doing this? Because there are so many people out there doing creative things that nobody knows about. And because writers like to write and we’re offering them a place to do that. And because there are artists and arts organizations out there that need one umbrella to huddle under and look around and see each other, all there together.

What you will see: In depth coverage of art openings, musical gigs, poetry readings, plays, films and such. Expressions of art, like the art of dating, of cooking, of travel and the search for spirituality. And also fairly comprehensive event listings across the North Shore, if you help by sending them to us.

Why Art Throb? Because we want to be the pulse, the go-to for interesting happenings. Because we hope, like a beating heart, to contract and expand back at you with things that keep you alive.

Art, we have observed, is where you find it.

Art Throb is Salem State College’s Community Partner for the 2009-2010 school year. This means we are working with college students on the future of online publishing and arts journalism. They are involved in writing, photography, video, web design and marketing the publication. In addition to working with interns, Art Throb is currently a teaching tool in a writing course, where students produce a weekly column called SalemStateoftheArts.
