DRESS ME UP IN ART

Conceptual in nature, “inVestements,” the 17 Cox Gallery most recent exhibit, challenges visitors’ perception of the traditional role of art. Taking its name from Henri Lefebvre’s description of “vestments” in his treatise “The Production of Space” (1974), the exhibit presents three artists large-scale altered spaces. By focusing on surface over the traditional art object, the artists literally “dress the space,” asking the viewer to contemplate not only the artistic work but the space it inhabits and transforms.

All three artists are MFA students at the School of Fine arts. Each artists’ work transforms the space with large-scale handmade works of art. Lucas Spivey, the gallery curator, writes, “Anderson’s faux wood is deceitful, its silkscreened wood grain patterns distract rather than describe. De Aguiar Sanchez’s collage is impactful, implying volume and chaos while it is nonetheless flat and rigidly patterned. Csekö’s mural of Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s work “Time of Useful Consciousness” is comprised of singular blocks of text so emboldened with color that they frustrate a linear reading of the whole.”

This Thursday the space will be transformed yet again with sound. Attend the closing ceremony to see the art and enjoy a evening of spoken word. The night will include readings from Grant Archer, Erik Lomen, Jordan Pomazon, Aaron Burger, Mike Vance, Amy Rodriguez, Elizabeth Paddock, Dan Ceritto, Phoebe Warner, and more.
