SPRING IS ALIVE AND WELL AT PORTER MILL STUDIOS

BIRDS ETC!: Alyssa Watters (aka. Bird Girl) 6th Annual Show

Have you heard the birds outside your morning window? The sounds of spring are finally penetrating the gloomy New England winter-scape. If you are looking for some inspiration, go to Porter Mill Gallery to catch the end of Alyssa Water’s bird-centric show, Bird, Etc!. The show ends March 30th, so there is no time to waste for those looking for their birdie fix. Her bright and energetic pallete brings new life to this classic topic. In juxtaposition to the drab snow squalls of late, gallery-visitors will find a visit to see this works refreshing.

Waters started the show six years ago in Hamilton as a small display of bird paintings in the window of a shop she used to run. She was blown away by how fast they sold so she did it again the following year, adding more pieces and an opening reception. Since then it has grown larger each year, landing her in the space at Porter Mill. Waters like the space at Porter Mill and comments that “it’s shape and raw feel with exposed brick and pipes…makes for a really unique, but spacious home for my show.”

There is a large twist to this show that sets it apart from all the others. When preparing for the show she said  ”I knew I didn’t want to completely box myself in with birds. I wanted to be able to paint whatever I was in the mood to paint.” The “ETC.” part of the show are drink themed paintings: cocktails, wine bottles, etc. “I did one and found that I really enjoyed painting glass, so I decided to run with it,” tranforming the show into more than just birds. The show is coming down soon so come to the closing receptions on March 30th. 12pm until 4:00pm!

Not free to see the show? You can attend the opening of the next show Porter Mill has up its sleeve. Opening on April 3rd and on view for the month April, Field of Dreams presents a two-person show that features Maria Malatesta & Christine O’Brien dreamy abstract paintings, also in response to nature. The show runs from April 3rd – April 28th. The opening reception is Thursday April 4th, 6:00pm – 8:00pm

Porter Mill continues to encompass a wide-variety of local artists working in variety of mediums and traditions. If you have not found your way to the galley, I highly recommend you find time to check it out. Find out more about Porter Mill.
